Szádvár Castle

Szádvár Castle
The ruins of the castle are located near the Hungarian-Slovak border near the village of Hrušov (approximately 6 km) in the cadastre of the Hungarian village of Szögliget. It lies on the High Castle Hill (Hungarian: magas Várhegy) at 460 metres above sea level and above the Stád valley (Hungarian: Ménes-völgy). This castle is one of the oldest castles in the territory of the former Turnian County. It offers a nice view of the surrounding countryside, especially towards Hungary, but in good weather it is also possible to see the High Tatras. It was built in the 13th century as a royal stone castle.
The castle was built by King Bélo IV on the basis of Mongol plundering in the 13th century. The first written mention of the castle is mentioned in the charter of King Stephen V in 1268.
