Silická glacier cave

Silická glacier cave
One of the most significant natural landmarks Silická plains in the Slovak Karst. It is located on the Silická plateau, 2 km west of the village of Silica. The mouth of the entrance corrosion-ruptive abyss is at an altitude of 503 m. The lower, mostly horizontal parts were formed by the underground flow of the Black Stream. The Archaeological Dome was penetrated by J. The continuation of the underground spaces along the Black Stream was discovered by Czech spelunkers in 1988. The cave is long 1100 m and deep 110 m, it is formed in Mesozoic Middle Triassic light-coloured Wetterstein limestones of the Silicic Limestone. The waters of the Black Stream from Silická glacier flow into the Gombasecká Cave.
The upper abyssal part of the Silická glacier is partially iced. When the transition to the lower parts was closed, a closed depressed space was formed with accumulation of cold air and ice formation. It is the lowest situated classic ice cave up to 50° north latitude of the temperate climate zone.
