Water mill Kováčová near Rožňava
The water mill in the village of Kováčová, which once belonged to the Andrássy family from Krásná Hôrka, has original original technical equipment and machinery for the flour milling process. This early 19th century building is privately owned by Mr Gejza Lyócsa and his wife. It is linked to the story of their family, and in particular to Mr Gejza Lyócsa's grandfather. His grandfather was the last in the family tradition of the miller's craft handed down from generation to generation.
Unfortunately, in 1950 the mill was nationalized and passed into the hands of the state. The mill building was closed and decayed for more than 50 years. After a thorough reconstruction, the original water mill has been open to the public since July 2019.
The building has 4 floors with original machinery. The mill wheel and its wooden trough were added to the mill as part of the restoration in 2021. During the tour, you will learn how flour was once produced using the original preserved equipment and hear the story of the miller and his family who last lived and worked here. The tour includes an exhibition of utilitarian and folk objects such as pottery, ceramics, wicker products, embroideries and other items from this area of Gemer. In a separate room you will also find an exhibition of traditional hemp processing and also woven products such as flour sacks, rugs, towels and tablecloths. The exhibition ranges from the various tools used in the production of hemp yarn to the looms on which it was woven.
